In just three days, you can immerse yourself in its fascinating history, indulge in delectable cuisine, and explore its picturesque neighborhoods. Here's a curated itinerary to make the most of your three days in Lisbon.

Lisbon's history is woven into every cobblestone street, from the Moorish influence in Alfama to the grandeur of Belém's historic monuments. Whether you're an art enthusiast, a history buff, or simply a lover of stunning views, Lisbon has something to offer everyone. So, prepare to embark on a journey through time and culture, where each day brings a new chapter in the story of this magnificent city.

Day 1: 28 Tram into Graça and Alfama

Take the tram 25 on weekdays, otherwise take the tram 28 (it does not work on weekends and bank holidays).

Switch to the tram 28 at the Prazeres Graveyard.

Stop at Graça and visit the 2 viewpoints points (Senhora do Monte and Graça viewpoints).).

Walk down to St.Vincent church and turn left where you will find the thieves market field and the National Pantheon.

Get lost" in Alfama (by walking down the stairs besides the kiosque at Portas do Sol, immediately turn left to reach St Estevão View Point)

Pass by commerce square, Cais do Sodré (where you have the Time Out market) and back home if you are staying at the Suites.

Day 2: Chiado, Baixa, Principe Real

Start at Commerce Square, pass under the arch and take this pedestrian street (Rua Augusta). Do not miss on your left St Justa elevator.

Pass by Rossio Square, and Rossio station on your left until

Restauradores square where you will find an obelisk. Turn back to Rossio square and take on your righ Rua do Carmo, going slightly up into Chiado District.

Pass Camões square and go further passing by Bica elevator on your left. Turn on the next street on the left and arrive at Santa Catarina Viewpoint.

Coming back to the main street, head north, entering Bairro Alto district and getting lost in it, to come out on the São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint

Continue going up, until you arrive at Principe Real district with amazing stores and restaurants. Just in front of the park you have a white Palace, called Embaixada, which is a different retail concept, with stores inside the palace mainly from portuguese designers or high quality handcrafted products.

Find Rua de São Marçal on your left side, which you take and walk down, passing by a small and beautiful square called Praça das Flores

Continuing going down, turning left, passing in front of the portuguese Parliament (Assembleia da República) and again left and you are back home if you are staying at the Suites.

Day 3: Cacilhas - Belém

Take the ferry at Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas.

When you come out of the ferry (boat) turn immediately right and find the river side. Walk for 1km until you find 2 restaurants (one of them being “Ponto Final”, one of our favourites).

Take the big elevator after the restaurants and at the top enter “Casa da Cerca” and enjoy the view over Lisbon from its beautiful gardens.

Return to Lisbon and in Cais do Sodré head towards Belém. You can take the tram 15, at Cais Sodré train station or our favorite way by renting a bicycle (there is a bicycle lane alongside the river all the way to Belém).

In Belém, walk around the monuments: the Belém tower, the Jeronimos monastery, the MAAT (that you passed by if you took a bicycle).

Try the famous custard cream tarts at Pastéis de Belém, however beware that the queue outside is only for take away, so go inside and the queue is much shorter.

On the way back from Belém, you can stop at LX Factory which is a former industrial park that is now a creative hub full of places to discover. Do not miss our favourite bookshop - “Ler Devagar”. On Sundays they also have their own flea market.

By working together, we can make a meaningful difference in protecting our planet while still enjoying everything that the beautiful city of Lisbon has to offer. Here are some of the sustainable practices we implemented and share with our guests:

Water Conservation

To conserve water, we kindly ask our guests to consider reusing towels and sheets during their stay, rather than requesting daily changes. In addition, we partner with a certified "green" laundry company to ensure that our linens are washed in an environmentally friendly manner. To further reduce plastic waste, we provide glass water bottles that guests can refill throughout their stay.

Energy Conservation

To minimize the energy consumption, we regulate the temperature of our air conditioning systems to maintain a comfortable environment while conserving energy. While guests have the flexibility to adjust the temperature to their preference, we encourage them to avoid extreme settings. Additionally, we encourage guests to turn off the lights when leaving their rooms. Moreover, to support our sustainable practices, we use energy-efficient LED lighting in our establishment.

Reducing Carbon Emissions

We are located in the heart of Lisbon and, because of this, we advise our guests to consider visiting the city without a car. Given the city's challenges with parking, by doing this, our clients don’t need to worry and they have the opportunity to explore the city by foot, cycling or using public transportation which is more enjoyable and authentic. Additionally, not using a car is a way to reduce carbon emissions, contributing to a greener environment for all.

Minimizing Environmental Footprint

To reduce paper waste, we have transitioned to digital alternatives for guest registration and communication. Guests have access to all necessary information through our Guest Portal app , eliminating the need for printed materials. We are heading into October, and while the rest of the European continent and our neighbours across the Atlantic are already welcoming autumn season, Lisbon is still pretty warm and sunny. Since it’s all about alfresco dining and drinking in this dazzling city, it’s best to continually enjoy the outdoors, ideally propped at the city’s highest platforms with astonishing sunset views.

Dotted around the city are plenty of rooftop spots where you can enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail of your choice, whether it’s a hip venue with DJs spinning their tunes or a classier affair with candlelights and cool vibe. PARK Bar

Perhaps the most vibrant rooftop venue in Lisbon, hands down. PARK Bar used to be a secret spot, but due to its popularity, it’s now known to almost every single visitor coming to the city. There’s no doubt about it – the atmosphere in this Bairro Alto venue is enthralling. Finding it proves slightly difficult — head towards the door at the car park entrance and you’ll find an elevator. Once you’re up there, there’s always groovy music on the air paired with gin cocktails and caipirinhas in a roof garden setting. Go prior to sundown before it gets packed and set yourself in this elevated garden on top of a cark park (hence the name) and celebrate a beautiful sunset with a great, buzzing international crowd.

At first you won’t notice this at all, as it’s hidden behind the Convento do Carmo. But once you locate it, it’s a real find. Elegantly perched on top of Chiado district, with views of the Elevador de Santa Justa and Rossio square, it’s a laidback venue that offers beyond wines and cocktails, there’s a restaurant, too. At weekend evenings, there tends to be a DJ playing the beats. And during the summer, it’s the setting to the Ciné Society Rooftop Cinema . You’ll have plenty of great late nights, with close walking to our apartments in Rossio .

Topo Martim Moniz

Set at the epicentre of the busy Martim Moniz district, high above the Centro Comercial, is another Topo joint. This is more stripped-back and low-key than its sibling in Chiado. However, you get an excellent view of Graça and Castelo, and I’d say a perfect spot to catch the sunset, with the last rays casting a golden glow on the hills across the valley. There’s a decent restaurant inside that serves meals such as risotto, pork ribs, sandwiches and burgers, but do stay longer, as the rooftop becomes a party venue at late nights.

Ferroviário

If you’re looking for a tropical-inspired rooftop bar, then this is the perfect place. Beyond that, this place is gathered much attention recently, after its renovation, launching a cool, vibrant spot near Santa Apolonia station. Even the curation of DJ’s makes you feel like you’re in Balearic paradise.

Lisbon’s affluent come here to drink and dine, and often chill by the pool and spa. When you’re strolling towards MAAT , do stop by, as this place is worth the detour. A great classic in the Campo Pequeno neighbourhood, O Nobre is a concept from renowned chef Justa Nobre, reinventing many traditional Portuguese dishes with modern touches. Sure, rents are significantly higher compared to five years ago, but current prices are still lower than its European neighbours. Transport is so reasonable. Eating out is still sensible. Located along the coast of Cascais and Sintra, Guincho Beach has a reputation for the adventurous. This is an incredibly popular spot for advanced surfing, wind and kite-surfing! Because of its exposure to the Atlantic Ocean, the beach is characterised by strong winds, therefore excellent for adrenaline seekers. Guincho also has this untouched feel to its landscape, with sand dunes and rocky cliffs, that make it look like a picture postcard.

Best Hidden Beach – Praia da Ursa

Once you’re in Cabo da Roca, the European continent’s westernmost point, a short hike away is this spectacular beach with rock formation that’s perfect for your Instagram snapshot. Praia da Ursa is still wonderfully preserved, and even considered by the Michelin Guide as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. You just need to be careful when you hike all the way down, as you’d need to traverse a rocky path to descend into this stunning beach.

Best Beach for Nature Lovers – Galapos Beach and Arrábida Beaches

This used to be Portugal’s well-kept secret, but not any longer. in 2017, the Galapos Beach in Serra da Arrábida was voted Best Beach in Europe, as voted by the Best European Destinations website. It’s not surprising, as this beach offers the most tranquil waters, beautiful paradise views, calm environment and just perfect for romantic getaways and nature lovers. It’s also surrounded the natural park of Arrábida, so you can really indulge in the nature surroundings with hiking and exploring the coast.

Best Beaches for Families – Costa da Caparica Beaches

Once you leave Lisbon and cross the Tagus River, head further south of the municipality of Almada and you’ll discover the 15-kilometer long coastal beauty of Costa da Caparica. Offering beaches for all types of beachgoers, surfers and other water sport seekers, Caparica has plenty enough beaches to give you the summer satisfaction. Most Relaxing Beach – Praia do Meco

It’s at the edge of the natural park of Serra da Arrábida, and it’s also popular for the nudist crowd in some parts of this long beach, if you’re into naturism. Try the amazing green mud for the called “argil” for skin exfoliations, and then head to Mania do Peixe By Guladomeco for a splendid seafood lunch.

Most Stylish Beach – Praia do Tamariz, Estoril

If you’re on the fancier side, head to Estoril and lounge at the fashionable Praia do Tamariz – where Portuguese Riviera meets southern French Mediterranean vibes. The affluent frequent this beach, and you can tell by the look of this resort town, the restaurants, terrace bars, cafes and the well-kept, picturesque seaside promenade. There’s even an Atlantic pool for extra relaxation points.

Best Beaches on Southern Peninsula – Sesimbra, Troia & Comporta

Head further down on the peninsula, and you’ll come across these places named Sesimbra, in Setúbal, the Troia Peninsula and at the southern end of this, the incredibly long Comporta Beach. This region of Portugal, just under 2 hours from Lisbon, is swathed with long beaches with fine sands and calm waters that’s perfect for summer vacations, and even weekend breaks. It’s getting popular that it’s being discovered, with real estate popping up, making it even more fashionable. It’s also situated near Sado Estuary National Reserve , surrounded with wildlife and pine forests, making this region even more special.

Most Convenient Beach in Lisbon – Praia de Santo Amaro de Oeiras

Once you get the train from Cais do Sodre or Santos, which is closer to our suites, you’ll be gliding along several beaches along the Lisbon coast towards Cascais. The closest one we can recommend is Praia de Santo Amaro de Oeiras (train stop: Santo Amaro), and it takes you only less than 20 minutes on the train. This 700-metre long beach has sandy slopes which makes it perfect for swimming. It has excellent amenities such as a few beach bars and cafes, accessible toilets and showers, it’s also an activity beach popular with locals running along the coastal track.

Most Popular Beach near Lisbon, Great for Surfing – Praia do Carcavelos

Next up is perhaps the most popular beach near Lisbon, Praia do Carcavelos, with an expanse that stretches to 1.25km long. It’s frequented by beachgoers, as well as surfers, as this beach offers great ocean wave conditions ideal for surfing, bodyboarding or kitesurfing. It’s also popular for beach sports such as volleyball. Aside from being spacious and expansive, there’s a very good facility of a pedestrianised walkway, with plenty of restaurants, cafes, shops, showers and toilets, too. You can even take your family to learn surfing, as there are surfing schools here that cater for beginners. It’ll make such a fun family day out.

15 Things To Know Before Visiting Lisbon: A City Guide When It’s Safe To Travel Again

Due to the current situation of the coronavirus epidemic, we are staying at home with our families, trying our best to be safe, healthy and full of hope. Travel isn’t recommended right now, but for many of us who love to travel and explore different corners of the globe, we want to be optimistic that someday soon, we will come out of our houses and that it will be safe to travel and visit our favourite places again. That’s why in the next succeeding time, we will be posting articles here at Cheese & Wine suites and apartments to celebrate the love for travel and the love for Lisbon. To give you, past and future guests something to look forward to when the world will be all right again and we meet in the Lisbon sun, hopefully soon.

When it comes to city break destinations, Lisbon is exceptional as it offers plenty of satisfying aspects compared to many European cities – the abundant sunshine, the great weather, the historic city with enviable lifestyle, the vibrant culture and the proximity to the beaches. The city manages to charm almost everyone who visits that coming back to explore more of the city’s envious lifestyle is inevitable. Some even fall in love with Lisbon passionately that they move in and become residents!

But just like visiting any place, it’s always good to acquire some knowledge about the city you’re visiting to find travelling much easier and more manageably. Lisbon is no exception. The city is packed with things to do and places to see, and more importantly, valuable and cultural points to remember to avoid surprises! Here’s a guide to the things you must know before coming to Lisbon, so you can travel nicely, wisely and appropriately.

1. Know what’s the best time of the year to visit.

Portugal’s climate is renowned in Europe and around the world to be mild and temperate, gifted with such a generous amount of sunshine all year round. But it’s best to remember that we have seasons here, too. Spring here is fresh and mild, mostly sunny with occasional shower spells. Summer is gloriously bright, dry and hot, but not too hot as there’s always the Atlantic breeze drifting through the city. Autumn is wonderfully mild, a great season to visit if you don’t like the heat much. And winter is typically colder, concentrated with some of the wettest days of the year. But this, too, has some surprises as there’s some sun in December and it is quite possible to enjoy sunshine at the beach even in February.

That said, there are always tourists all year round, as Lisbon is so popular. The peak season is spread through the spring, summer and early autumn months. However, there’s also pleasure to be had in visiting during winter months, especially for budget travellers, as when the season is low, accommodation prices are much lower, too. Usually half the price compared to the peak months. The only compromise you have is to deal with the unpredictable weather. But the guarantee you have is the beautiful city of Lisbon around you!

2. Avoid bringing cars to Lisbon.

If you’re arriving in Lisbon by plane, chances are you won’t need a car as the city is immensely walkable, the public transport is reliable, and affordable Uber car service is at the touch of your smartphone. However, if you do come to Lisbon by car, or are thinking of renting a car, please think again. You’ll have more headache in the chaotic Lisbon traffic, and waste loads of time by finding a parking space. It’s almost impossible to park on the streets in the centre of Lisbon, as they’re either allocated to residents or mostly paid, leaving you with the option of parking lots, which are very expensive, costing at least €25 for an entire day.

We recommend to only rent a car when you have trips planned outside Lisbon, then it’s a perfect getaway transport to explore outer areas along the coast of Cascais, the nature in Sintra, the vast plains of Alentejo and the countryside of Portugal.

3. Bring comfortable shoes.

Lisbon is a city of seven hills, and if that bears meaning to you, it means you’ll have to be kind to your feet. Forget bringing heels or your shiny boots. Wear the most comfortable shoes you can have. Lisbon is beautiful and offers magnificent views, but to get to those views, there are some hilly terrain and stairs to climb. We absolutely recommend walking as a lot of Lisbon’s beauty is hidden along winding, cobblestone streets, little alleyways and getting lost in vibrant neighbourhoods with plenty of stairways. On a beautiful day, you’ll give yourself a nice outdoor walking activity, with a lot of healthy walking exercise to boot! 4. Know the Portuguese basics.

Portuguese are famous to be warm, friendly, accommodating people, and so hospitable that most people speak English as a de facto interaction with their visitors. However, speaking some basic Portuguese words would certainly enhance that interaction, and even win some respect and cordiality with the locals.

It’s always nice when you’d say “Ola” (“Hello”) as a starting point, and “Obrigado” (“Thank you”), for male speakers, and “Obrigada” for female speakers, and “De nada” (“You’re welcome”) after a transaction. Or you say “Por favor” (“Please”) with a smile, or “Desculpa” (“Sorry”) if you accidentally bump anyone. Or when leaving, say “Adeus” (“Goodbye”) with a friendly wave. This brings a smile to people’s faces.

Even when ordering coffee, there’s a multitude of coffee types you can order in Portugal. To help you avoid confusion, order “Bica” if you wanted an espresso-type coffee, “Abatanado” if you wanted an americano or long black coffee. “Galão” if you wanted a large coffee with milk. “Meia de leite” for a milky coffee, “Descafeinado” for a want of decaf, and “Cha” if you fancy tea instead.

5. Beware of pickpockets in public transport and crowded places.

Like most touristy places, it is quite unfortunate that such incidents like pickpocketing exist, and Lisbon is no exception. It is most common in crowded areas, such as in trams and other public transports, and in tourist spots where there’s heavy traffic. So it’s best to use common sense to look after your belongings well. Don’t leave bags open, and don’t store your phones and wallet in pockets but place them securely inside your bags. And always have your bag in front of you, not behind you, to avoid any incident as thieves can be real quick.

6. Avoid taxis, use Uber.

We’ve written in a recent blog post about getting around Lisbon smartly, and we advised avoiding taxis and using Uber instead. Taxis have a terrible reputation of overcharging customers and driving you through longer routes than necessary, trust our experience! Meanwhile Uber has a better reputation – these cars are known to be secure, with all transactions done digitally through your smartphone, making sure you’re not overcharged. Plus you can map your route visually, and keep track of your route. What’s more, Uber drivers are far friendlier, most cases speak fluent English and guaranteed to give you a far reliable service. We’ve covered this topic in our recent guide to the practical ways of getting around Lisbon .

7. Pay attention to the bill.

Remember that time when, at the end of your dinner, you take the bill and suddenly the total price is higher than you’d expected? That happens here, too. Always check the bill, and see if it tallies all the things you’ve ordered. It’s common in Portugal that restaurants serve you “entradas”, or “starters”, such as olives, goat cheese, and bread. However, there is a rule that if you don’t touch them, you don’t pay. So be careful to check at the bill if you’ve been charged for what you consume, to avoid confusion and disapproving looks from the waiters.

8. Book a table, if you can. Bring cash.

Plenty of restaurants and cafés are flexible, and some places don’t take bookings and you’d have to enter on a first-come, first-served basis. But if you can book a table, please do. We suggest looking up restaurants at Google Maps, as usually the phone numbers will be available. We also recommend booking through Fork or Zomato website, as they’re quite efficient. A lot of popular venues are at their busiest during the weekend, so it’s sensible to book in advance.

And if you’re heading to the smaller, low-key Portuguese tascas, the little restaurants in the local neighbourhoods, it’s advised to bring cash with you as a lot of these places have little digital capacity and don’t accept cards. Cash is the best currency here.

9. Avoid tourist traps, especially in Baixa.

There are a lot of places, especially throughout the downtown area of Baixa, claiming to be “authentic” Lisbon or “typical Portuguese”, when they’re not. There are shops and places here that, nonetheless set an old building, claim to be from a distant century, when in fact they’re just remodelled to appeal to oblivious tourists. Original pastel de nata? Nope. That’s in Belem. A tin of sardines costing €15? Think again. Think tourist traps. Here’s our guide to the downtown districts of Baixa- Chiado .

10. Don’t pay too much for beer, nor coffee.

You’d expect to pay €5 or €8 for beer in cities like London, Paris, Copenhagen, but not in Lisbon. Typical Portuguese beer, such as Sagres or Superbock, ranges from €1,50 for an imperial (0.33 ml) and €3 or 4 for a caneca (a pint-size). Unless you go to fancy bars for imported or craft beers. The same goes for coffee here. In Lisbon, and throughout Portugal, coffee is reasonable and cheap. It often costs you €1 for a bica, or €1,30 for an abatanado, or americano. There will be places that charges you €3 for an americano, €4 for latter, which is a steep price for Lisbon. As locals, we don’t support to normalise this, and neither should you. Lisbon should remain affordable, it is part of its authenticity and charm.

11. Grab a drink and sit by the waterfront.

Speaking of drinks, we highly recommend spending some time sitting by the waterfront, as you sip that glass of wine, or even better, cocktails. The Ribeira das Naus esplanade is perfect for this, right at the edge of the river between Praça do Comercio and Cais do Sodré. It’s a place that’s popular for sunbathing on deck chairs, or simply watching sailboats or gazing across the soft waves of the azure blue Tagus. Come at sunsets and there’ll be music, with DJs spinning their party rhythms, making for an ideal spot for sundown aperitif and a bit of dancing, too.

12. Watch the sunsets in miradouros.

Another pleasurable thing you can do in Lisbon is to spend time watching the sunsets in a few of the miradouros that punctuates on top of Lisbon’s hills. Not only do they offer breathtaking views, but also a delightful ambiance of the sun’s last rays casting blazing colours across the city and the Tagus river. Enjoy a glass of wine or beer at the Miradouro da Graça, or listen to the busking musicians at the highest point, Miradouro Senhora da Monte. Across the valley, there’s the recently re-opened Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara with a glorious panorama, and the Miradouro de Santa Catarina, with its hipper, younger crowd, enjoying a few drinks and possibly a dance or two whilst looking out to the gleaming river. Aside from viewpoints, don’t forget to explore Lisbon’s many rooftop bars and restaurants, which also offers excellent drinking and dining experience, with romantic views of Lisbon. 13. Get lost in the streets of Alfama.

They say if you haven’t been lost around the neighbourhood of Alfama, you haven’t been to Lisbon at all. The old, cobblestone streets, narrow alleyways, ramparts and stairs that wind around the hills, it’s a place that hasn’t been touched by time and natural events that a lot have been preserved. Therefore, it’s highly recommended to explore its labyrinthine features, as every corner surprises you with detail, vibrancy and life. Come during summer and the waft of grilled sardines drift across the air, at the same time full of music, singing and dancing, celebrating the city’s patron Santo Antonio.

14. Visit the vibrant markets.

In Lisbon, we have some of the oldest surviving markets in Europe, and in the world. And even more surprisingly, they still thrive and become even more popular as years go by. Take Feira da Ladra, for example, which originates from the 13 ^th century and has become a Lisbon tradition. Situated in Campo Clara, you’ll find all sorts of vintage treasures, bric-a-bracs, second-hand clothing, tiles, artwork, books and anything else that you can imagine. It runs every Tuesday and Saturday, and never fails to delight and entertain both visitors and locals.

Head to Principe Real every Saturday, too, for another great spot of vintage market shopping. It also exhibits plenty of local Portuguese handicrafts and artisan products, as well as an organic market with fresh produce that comes straight from farms around the country. Also check out the world-popular TimeOut Market, where you can indulge with various gastronomies that Lisbon has to offer and dine all day and night!

15. Take the ferry across the river.

One of the most undervalued and underrated activities whilst you’re in Lisbon is taking a ferry across the waters. Understandably, it isn’t very obvious at first, but perhaps the best view of Lisbon’s skyline is one viewed from across the river. So take some time to use the ferry and cross to Cacilhas, a small harbour town with rustic restaurants, including our favourite Restaurante Ponto Final, where you can dine on a riverfront patio whilst gazing at the incredible maritime view around you. Lisbon Guide: A Tour Through Baixa, Chiado & Príncipe Real Districts

Look up Best European Destination at search engines, and you’ll definitely come across Lisbon. The city recently won the World Travel Awards as Europe’s Leading City Break Destination. It’s no surprise as over the years, the Portuguese capital has constantly and steadily climbing along many people’s radar, engaging and charming as many visitors and all those who come and discover the city. For one, it’s one of Europe’s sunniest cities, offering over 300 days of sunshine per year. This abundance of light and warmth means the city makes for a perfect for holidays all year round, mild in the winter, and temperate in the summer. It doesn’t get too cold, and neither does it get too hot. There’s always the Atlantic breeze cooling down the place during the balmy months.

It’s also incredibly colourful, welcoming and rich with history. Lisbon is one of the Europe’s oldest cities, and with hills that surround it’s terra firma, giving it lots of character and dramatic views. But one thing that surprises many is to find the city to be extremely walkable. As long as you’re delighted to climb a few inclines here and there, Lisbon will rewards you with beautiful surprises in every corner. Walk towards downtown

From our Cheese & Wine boutique hotel suites in Santos, walk along Rua da Boavista, heading towards Cais do Sodré. This street bore witness to a new wave of revitalisation with plenty of trendy shops, cafes, galleries, bars and restaurants popping up to welcome both locals and visitors. There’s Neighbourhood Café , with its blue-tiled front and bringing Aussie specialty coffee to Lisbon town. For your pastel de nata cravings, there’s A Pousadinha , the newest delicacy corner in this road. If you’re idea for lunch or dinner is Mexican, then there’s the excellent Coyo Taco just along the way. For shopping, there’s Plus351 store and atelier, with clothes and products that are 100% Portuguese made.

Ascensor da Bica

Just a short walk away is the famous funicular, Elevador da Bica, or also known as Ascensor da Bica. It takes you all the way up to the Bairro Alto neighbourhood, and it’s also one of the most quintessentially Lisbon spots with this furnicular that’s been climbing up and down this hill since the early 20th century. Praça de São Paulo

Across the road is a beloved square, Praça de Sao Paulo with its picturesque fountain and the church Igreja de São Paulo standing at the front. It’s a good place to unwind and relax in this square, with lots of shade from the trees during the summer. There’s a beautiful red kiosk here, too, where you can freshen yourself up with drinks or take a little snack.

Stroll along Lisbon waterfront

Once you’ve crossed Av. 24 de Julho and walked past the Cais do Sodré station, you’ll arrive at a favourite Lisbon hangout – the great Lisbon waterfront. A lot of people tend to flock here along this long promenade as it’s a relaxing place to be. With the sparkling Tejo and the inviting atmosphere, you’ll be drawn here to lounge and sunbathe on one of the reclining benches, or simply sit by the river bank and breathe that sea breeze, as you look out across the waters and glimpse at Cristo Rei and the Ponte 25 de Abril.

You’ll also find Ribeira das Naus with a kiosk and its stunning riverfront terrace that’s perfect to stop by for coffee and drinks. Take one of the lounge chairs and feel the absolute relaxation Lisbon can offer. It’s one of Lisbon’s most popular esplanades, and whether during daytime or sunsets, you’ll find that lots of people love staying here!

Praça do Comercio

Lisbon’s mighty square, commonly known as Terreiro do Paço. The Royal Palace used to stand among this site, but unfortunately due to the 1755 earthquake, that was destroyed. Now you bear witness the completely rebuilt square, as led by by Marquês de Pombal , along with the incredible Arco da Rua Augusta. This triumphal arch that was built to commemorate the city’s devastation. Now you can go up there for €3, and enjoy an excellent 360-degree aerial view of the square, the Tagus river and Lisbon’s downtown.

Confeitaria Nacional

Walk along the busy Rua Augusta thoroughfare that’s full of shops, cafes, and commercial spaces. And at the end, before reaching Praça do Rossio, turn right and at the edge of Praça da Figueira, is a true Lisbon classic – Confeitaria Nacional. This confectionery café has been here since 1829, and has been serving traditional Portuguese pastries ever since.

Praça Dom Pedro IV

One of the most beautiful squares in the entire of Lisbon, Praça Dom Pedro IV, or commonly known as Rossio Square, gives off a wonderful allure with its black and white wave pattern pavement. There are two baroque fountains to be found here, and a 23-metre high column with a statue of Dom Pedro IV dominating the middle.

Close by, in this area, is a Cheese & Wine apartments that make for a glorious location and base during your stay in Lisbon, and you are stying in a most central and stylish location, right in the heart of the city.

Praça dos Restauradores

Just right next to Rossio is another majestic square, featuring an obelisk monument dedicated to the Portuguese independence from the Spanish crown. Around the square are various classical and art deco buildings, but none could match the grandeur of the pink palace, Palacio Foz.

Chiado

Climb up to Lisbon’s most elegant shopping district, where you can experience the Portuguese café culture, luxury shopping, gastronomic dining and tour around some of the historic landmarks that punctuate the corners of this beautiful district. The place is full of shops, but we would recommend checking out the historical shops that’s been kept preserved throughout the years. Check out Joalharia do Carmo , with iconic Art Nouveau façade, and then Luvaria Ulisses , the only shop in Portugal dedicated to selling gloves

Convento do Carmo

Up towards Largo do Carmo is a ruined beauty that, despite of the devastating earthquake in 1755, remained standing and enchanting visitors of Lisbon. Convento do Carmo is that Lisbon icon that have stood the test of time, a Romantic Gothic piece of architecture with arches that soar up to the sky. It’s never been rebuilt, and is kept as a reminder to the historical event. There’s also an archeological museum inside, containing tombs and many other relics from the past.

Praca Luis de Camões

This bright, beautiful square is a popular meeting point for locals and visitors, with its strategic position just at the edge of Chiado district and the Bairro Alto neighbourhood. You’ll see the yellow trams charmingly scuttling around the square, and people hang out here, sitting by the benches or the foot of the pillared statue of Portugal’s greatest poet, Luis de Camões. And just at the corner is the famous pastel de nata shop, Manteigaria . So do try and indulge yourself in some of the sweet pastries with coffee.

Miradouro de Santa Catarina

There’s an excellent viewpoint here at the Santa Catarina neighbourhood, and one that’s a popular haunt for sunbathing, drinking, hanging out, or simply staring at the panoramic view of Lisbon’s waterfront and the Tagus River. It’s also called the Adamastor Viewpoint, and at the corner is a quiosque where drinks and little snacks are served. There’s also a terrace café called Noobai , with its multi-floored terrace venue, opening up to the view of the skyline. Or if you fancy something a little classier, there’s Pharmacia bar and restaurant, with an outdoor space and a garden ambiance that’s perfect for drinks. And when you’re hungry, something to eat from its delightful menu.

Príncipe Real

From Santa Catarina, walk up to Rua de O Século, past Palácio Pombal, and you’ll emerge at the Principe Real district, an upscale, trendy neighbourhood full of 19th century buildings, palaces, botanic gardens, bars and restaurants and a thriving boutique shopping scene. And right at the heart of this district is a wonderful oasis, Jardim do Príncipe Real, where residents, families and visitors enjoy the outdoor space, sitting at esplanades and just making the most of the garden. On Saturdays, there’s a vintage and organic market, where you can explore vintage treasures, bric-a-bracs, or shop for your local farm produce.

A Cevicheria

We’ve singled out this restaurant in Príncipe Real because aside from being our favourite, we also do highly recommend this Peruvian ceviche restaurant A Cevicheria by Chef Kiko. It’s been maintained with such high quality over the years, using fresh ingredients in all their dishes, packed full of flavours and delightful touches. The space is relatively small, so we recommend going there for a late lunch, and try getting your name in the door by mid-afternoon. It’s worth the wait (have a pisco sour while you queue), and trust us, you’ll discover the most amazing dishes. Try the Pure Ceviche and Sea Quinoto. You won’t regret it!

Embaixada

Once you’re finished your splendid lunch, head to Embaixada , the neo-Moorish palace turned shopping destination featuring stellar artisan shops selling excellent Portuguese-made products. You’ll also find restaurants and bars within.

A favourite local spot that serves, well, chocolate and coffee! There’s a marvellous collection of chocolate delicacies here, originating from the family cocoa plantation in São Tome & Principe. The coffee is absolutely great, too.

Getting Around Lisbon: A Practical Travel Guide

There’s no doubt that Lisbon is an easily navigable city, historic in a sense but modern in so many ways. It’s one of Europe’s oldest cities, and yet enjoys a solid, contemporary infrastructure, a well-connected international airport, an extensive network of transport options that makes travelling an ease in and around Lisbon.

However, it’s always a challenge when you’re visiting a place for the first time, as you’d have to navigate your way around local systems and city practices. Although Lisbon is a reliable, affordable city to move around, it’s absolutely worth knowing such vital information to ensure that you won’t be overcharged on a taxi ride, you make the most of your transport tickets, and that you skip unnecessarily long queues along the way! We also cover things like whether it’s a safe city, is it child-friendly, and a little bit of local pleasantries to get along with the Lisboetas.

So sit back and go through our essential tips in how to get around Lisbon like a pro, so there’s less stress and more fun and enjoyment in this beautiful, sunny city.

From the airport

As soon as you land Lisbon, you’d ask yourself: what’s the best way to get to our suites? From our view, Uber is the best way. It’s the easiest, most reasonable and affordable direct mode of transport from the airport our Cheese & Wine hotel suites in Santos, and our several apartment locations around the city centre. For approximately €12, you’ll be driven directly to our suites, without you having to worry about carrying your luggages up and down Metro stations, and changing lines, too. Especially if you’re travelling as a couple or with family, it works far better than taking the Metro. Remember, Uber pick-up location at the airport is at the departure area, so as soon as you exit the terminal, turn right towards the escalator and go out to the departure parking area.

We do not recommend taking the taxis, as they have a bad reputation. In our experience, taxi drivers tend to overcharge the clients and take longer routes. So you’ll have a much better experience with Uber, as it’s reliable and they offer better cars and better drivers, too. If you want a more exclusive service, we can also organise airport transfers for you. Contact us to book a transfer.

Viva Viagem card is a must

Getting a Viva Viagem card, or the green travel card, is an absolute must-have in Lisbon. Since the Metro has already phased out individual tickets, travellers are now required to purchase the magnetic card for €0.50, which you can load up as you wish. You can procure this on all subway stations, on vending machines, and in some kiosks and stationary shops in the city. You can then use this card on any mode of transportation, such as the Metro, buses, train, trams, ferries and some funiculars and elevators.

We recommend to our guests to load your card according to the number of trips you’re going to make, so you don’t end up with unused money on your card at the end of your travel. For example, most of the city’s historic centre is very walkable so it doesn’t make much sense if you load your card with a day pass that costs €6.40. Otherwise you’ll have to make sure you take transport 3 or 4 times to make the most of it. So if you plan to only take one or two transports per day, especially for those lovers of walking, we recommend loading up on the vending machines only if you need to take the trip from A to B. Take note: it always works out cheaper when you zap with the Viva Viagem card. For example, if you buy a ticket on the tram with cash, it will cost €2.90. Whereas with the green card, it’s only €1.25.

Apps that helps in ease of travel

Nowadays, there are now plenty of smartphone applications for the tech savvy to help users and travellers in your journeys in cities. Lisbon, as an entrepreneurial tech hub, has plenty of smart ways to assist tourists and visitors in getting around the capital. Citymapper is a fine example It helps you calculate the easiest, most convenient, even the cheapest and greenest route to your destination, giving you options of all modes of transport, from metro, bus, trams, bikes, and even taxi or Uber , which is fully operating in Lisbon. It even tells you the weather, not that you need that as you’re in a predominantly sunny city! Google Maps is also incredibly handy and another great way to look up locations, mode of transportations, and even looking up restaurants! It’s super comprehensive, extremely reliable and very easy to use to help you navigate your way around the city. All of this, you can find in our handy GuestU smartphones.

Take the historic 28 tram with less queues

This is one of the most overlooked fact in Lisbon – there is a way in which you can avoid long queues when taking the iconic Number 28 tram. Most people head to the super busy Martim Moniz square, where there’s an invincibly long line of tourists waiting to get on board the vintage yellow eléctricos.

For an alternative route, go to the other side of the city, in Prazeres, where there are less tourists. From our Cheese & Wine Suite , take No. 25 tram to Prazeres , and then change to the No. 28 there. This corner has less people, and you’re more likely guaranteed with a good seat, and therefore more enjoyment. This will then take you across the major districts of Lisbon, such as Cais do Sodré, Baixa-Chiado , and then climb up on the historic hills of Alfama and Graça for your sightseeing tours. Don’t forget to tap with Viva Viagem card as it’s much cheaper.

Lifts and funiculars

You can also access the city’s famous lift, Elevador da Santa Justa for a return ticket of €5.15. If you’d like to avoid any fee and still getting the lift views from up above, we recommend walking through Rua Garrett, and then up to Largo do Carmo. Beside the Convento do Carmo is a little pathway that leads to the same platform as Santa Justa. No fees, no queues, and you’ll get to enjoy the same view of Lisbon.

For funiculars, Lisbon has three of them: Elevador da Bica, Elevador da Glória and Elevador da Lavra. Take note: before you take the funiculars, it’s better to load your Viva card in a nearby station with the exact funicular trip you’re going to make, and each way costs €1.45. And then it’s as easy as zapping your card and hop on. Otherwise, it’s €3.80 for a return trip if you pay cash on board.

Ferries across the Tagus

For ferries, especially if you wanted to explore the other side of the Tagus River, it’s for an incredibly reasonable price of €1.27 if you zap with the Viva Viagem card, each way. We recently recommended this in our latest Lisbon guide to visit the district of Cacilhas , as taking the ferry would give you great views of Lisbon and experience the waterfront restaurants such as Ponto Final . To go to Cacilhas, ferries depart from Cais do Sodré.

Getting to Belém

We highly recommend going to Belém , this wonderful museum district lined with a stunning waterfront, the Jéronimos Monastery, Torre de Belém and Padrão dos Descobrimentos. Check out our Belém guide here . You’d need to take the suburban Estoril-Cascais railway line. It departs from Cais do Sodré, and Belém is the 3 ^rd stop. It will cost you €1.25 each way, so make you load your card with 2 trips to return to Lisbon’s main terminal.

Getting to Sintra

You must have heard of Sintra by now. This romantic, lush, ever-green historic town just 25km from Lisbon. The best and most reasonable way to get there is by the CP train, which departs from Rossio railway station. It’s the one with the magnificent Moorish-inspired building. A single fare costs €2.25, and children are discounted half-price. It’s an incredible train price for a beautiful day trip in the countryside, for you to experience the magical Palácio da Pena, Quinta da Regaleira, Palácio do Monserrate, Palácio Nacional de Sintra and so many more. Another tip to avoid long queues in the Rossio station is to load your Viva Viagem card in advance, in the vending machines in metro stops. This way, you skip all those ridiculous line, zap your card on the train barrier and enjoy the journey to Sintra, hassle-free.

If you prefer a full guided tour of this magical, romantic place, we organise a day trip in Sintra, Cascais and Estoril. It’s a full day tour with a local guide and driver, as you’ll experience Sintra’s incredible palaces, parks and breathtaking views, and then followed by a walk along Sintra’s beaches, stand at Europe’s westernmost point, Cabo da Roca, and visit the town Cascais and Estoril on a scenic drive back to Lisbon. It costs €55 person, and you can book your experience with us here .

Exploring the beaches

For lovers of the sea and the coast, fortunately Lisbon has a wonderfully easy access to the some of the great beaches in this side of the Atlantic. In approximately 20 minutes from Cais do Sodre, when you take the Estoril-Cascais railway line, you’ll discover places such as Carcavelos Beach, and further on, the excellent coastal towns of Estoril and Cascais, offering relaxing seaside life and getaways. Getting there covers a four-zone fair, so that sets you €2.25, each way. Do remember, children under 3 years old are free. And children between 3-12 years old are discounted at half the price.

To explore the beaches located across the Tagus delta, the popular Costa da Caparica, you have the option of taking the ferry from Belém to Trafaria (the second and final stop after Porto Brandão), which is only €1.25 each way. And then from Trafaria, either take an Uber from there, or the bus, which takes you to Praia de São João in roughly 5 minutes. Just remember, ferries on the Belém to Trafaria route are quite limited with a ferry every hour, and last departure from Trafaria is at 21.00. If budget is not as issue, we recommend Uber, priced at approximately €14 each way.

Is Lisbon a safe city?

Yes, delightfully so. Lisbon is renowned as one of the safest cities in Europe. Meanwhile, as a country, Portugal has been recently voted as the 3 ^rd most peaceful country in the world , according to the Global Peace Index. Lisbon has a very low crime rate and is quite safe in many respects. Yet with most capital cities, petty crimes such as pickpockets are unavoidable, especially in crowded areas like trams and public transportations and very touristy places. So it’s best to be wary and take precautions. Look after your belongings carefully.

Beyond that, it’s a friendly, warm and welcoming city. Lisbon is known to be progressive, tolerant and liberal. It’s considered a very safe city for anyone: for families, for solo travellers or female travellers, It’s also gay-friendly and absolutely welcomes everybody in all walks of life. Nightlife here is also considered one of the most peaceful in Europe, and you can walk around and be very comfortable with Lisbon’s safe atmosphere. And like most cities, it’s best to use common sense and you’ll enjoy the city a lot.

Is Lisbon a child-friendly city?

Portugal has a family-oriented culture, and Lisbon is the super safe, child-friendly capital. The city has excellent infrastructure for kids, including indoor and outdoor activities, as well parks and restaurants that cater for the young ones. Whether is a 3-day trip or a weekend in Lisbon, the city is also packed with sightseeing activities, from museums to monuments, from the Lisbon Oceanarium to Lisbon Zoo that cater for the younger ones. Even our Lisbon boutique hotel and apartments can accommodate families , so you can fully enjoy the best city break in this beautiful capital with your loved ones.

As the sun shines in Lisbon most of the time, outdoor activities are highly recommended. That’s why we suggest enjoying the most of Lisbon’s riverside, taking you across the Tagus river in Cacilhas , and then spend the rest of the day in the stunning promenade of Belém district. And even when the weather isn’t agreeable at the later part of the year, there are still plenty of things to do in Lisbon in winter, indoor spots such as museums, galleries and even greenhouse gardens to spend quality time in.

Itinerary: A Day in Lisbon with your Family and Kids

Lisbon is a safe, secure and child-friendly city, so you’ll have no worries in touring around its locations, with warm and welcoming establishments that will attend to your children’s needs. Family is very central to Portuguese life, and therefore it’s truly a wonderful place to spend your holidays with families. This is evident in the tourist industry, as tourist attractions here are accommodating and even supportive of your enjoyment.

Take the ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas

From our boutique hotel in Santos , head to the Terminal Fluvial in Cais do Sodré and take a ferry across the river to Cacilhas. It’s not the most obvious Lisbon sightseeing route, but there’s a real underrated pleasure in crossing the Tagus river. Lisbon is just as beautiful as viewed from the other side, as you can perceive from the ferry the picture-perfect view of Lisbon’s historic town, laid out in front of you. It’s also quite reasonable trip to take, as it costs less than €4 for a return trip. There are ferries in 20-minute intervals, and takes roughly 15 minutes to cross the river.

Walk along Cais do Ginjal waterfront to Jardim do Rio

One of the great reasons of crossing the Tagus estuary is to explore the waterfront neighbourhood of Cacilhas. The main district here has been recently revitalised, whereby visitors start pouring in, with a plethora of seafood restaurants to choose from. Furthermore, the long stretch of Cais do Ginjal, while still full of empty warehouses, is now a major architectural project that will soon transform the South Bank into a Water City .

Elevador Panorâmico da Boca do Vento miradouro

Enter into this panoramic elevator cabin that will take you to great heights, with an incredible view of Lisbon. The platform up above offers practically similar view to what you’d get in Cristo Rei statue. There’s also a bar café here, Boca do Vento, which could catch a break with coffee or drinks whilst glimpsing at that skyline.

Casa da Cerca

One of Almada’s stunning features is this cultural centre, set atop an historic hill with incomparable views of the Tagus estuary and the Lisbon panorama. It’s set in the Cerca Palace that’s been turned into a Centre for Contemporary Art, featuring exhibitions, a botanical garden, and an outdoor terrace café, perfect for unwinding with views.

Restaurante Ponto Final

Your trip in Calcilhas area isn’t complete without a meal in the Portuguese classic Restaurante Ponto Final . This used to be an off-the-beaten track spot, but ever since Lisbon guides have put this on the must-visit places, this restaurant has been ever so popular that visitors deliberately take the trip across the river just to dine here. And there’s no question, it boasts the best view of any restaurant, with an outdoor patio providing a scenic view of Lisbon’s waterfront and skyline.

Bike tour along Belém riverside

The most common activity along Belém riverside is undertaking a great stroll through its promenades and marinas. But why not make it even more fun by hiring bikes and cruise along its bike-friendly paths! There are a few bike rentals along the way ( Lisbon Bike Rentals ), and take your family to a spin along Belém’s many monuments and museums. It’s an incredibly fun way to spend an afternoon, and get to know the features set alongside the Tagus river, defining Lisbon’s major tourist attractions.

Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge

Pass by one of Lisbon’s distinctive landmarks, this engineering feat that connects Lisbon city proper to the municipality of Almada. Visually similar to that of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge (that’s because both bridges share the same construction companies), you’ll see plenty of sailboats, container ships and cruise ships sailing past. Stop by here, and take that picture-perfect photograph for your Instagram memories.

MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture & Technology)

A recent, modern addition to Lisbon’s skyline, this undulating architectural masterpiece rides like a wave extending from the Tagus bank. It’s known as the Museum of Art, Architecture & Technology , the new extension from the old yet iconic Tejo Power Station . The new space features a great collection of exhibitions of both national and international renown. Or simply a great place to hang out, sit on its steps while you sunbathe or watch the sunset, and even gaze towards the forever flowing river. You’ll find it quite a relaxing spot.

The Discoveries Monument

Standing just at the edge of Tagus bank is The Discoveries Monument , this piece of architectural commemoration of Portugal’s Age of Discoveries . Nostalgic and monumental, it pays homage to the overseas expansion of a past glorious empire, as well as celebrating Infante Dom Henrique, or Henry the Navigator .

Stop by and go inside, for €6 you’ll get to see a gallery, as well as take the elevator that leads all the way to a viewing platform. Hands down, it’s one of the best views of Lisbon you’ll ever see. Looking out to the marina and the riverside, with a spectacular aerial view of the Ponte 25 de Abril bridge, the Cristo Rei and the district of Belém. You’ll also get to see the bird’s eye view of the World Map of Discoveries, which is a stunning depiction of Portugal’s global reach.

Jerónimos Monastery

This Hieronimyte monastery is one of the must-see places in Lisbon, and it’s one of the key structures in the entirety of Portugal so don’t miss it on your visit. Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is an impressive symbol of Portuguese architecture and global expansionism. It was built by King Manuel I , and had seen figures such as Vasco da Gama and the poet Luis de Camões , whose tomb lies here. The architecture itself is incredibly special, developing what is now known as “Manueline”. Every pillar, wall and cloister are carved with elaborate details and nautical motifs. It costs €10 for an entrance ticket, yet it’s worth every penny to experience this glorious monument.

Pastéis de Belém

Your Belém journey isn’t complete without a visit to the renowned pastry café Pastéis de Belém , the makers of the original pastéis de nata. This shop has been serving these sweet custard tarts since 1837, from an ancient recipe that originated from Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. The story comes from a tale of survival, when the monasteries and convents in Portugal were shut down during the 1820 liberal revolution. The monks, who had access to lots of eggs from farms and a sugar cane refinery, created this recipe and began supplying to a nearby shop that soon became Pastéis de Belém. The recipe is unchanged until today.

Head to Lx Factory

Once you’ve wrapped up your tour of Belém, head to the Lx Factory in Alcântara district. This renewal and re-urbanisation of an old textile factory that’s put Lisbon on the entrepreneurial map, creating a hub of over 50 shops, restaurants, bars and cafés. It’s a delightful place where you can see plenty of street art, urban vibe, as well as art exhibitions and Sunday market!

Ler Devagar

What was an old printing factory had been transformed into a super bookshop called Ler Devagar . Whether you’re a bookworm or simply a curio, there’s thousands of books for your reading pleasure. It’s been featured as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world in many publications. Whilst you’re here, check out upstairs for an exhibition of vintage printing machines.

Just at the back of Ler Davagar is this unassuming Pan Asian restaurant called Malaca Too , serving delicious, authentic dishes with a mix of Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, Korean and Japanese. This restaurant is inspired by the 16 ^th century Portuguese voyage across Asia, hence the fusion of cuisines.

That’s why here at Cheese & Wine Suites and Apartments , we are always ready to provide you with local knowledge and handy tips around the city, recommending you far beyond the touristy spots, even the hidden little corners and the hitherto undiscovered gems.

As part of our “Handmade hospitality” credo, we’ve recently undertaken an exciting video project, a video series that provides our guests (and anyone who comes to explore our beloved Lisbon) brief tour guides around the city, including good tips and recommendations. Since we care about your stay in Lisboa, we offer you the benefit of showing you around, hopefully making things a lot easier for you to navigate these neighbourhoods we’ll cover.

Itinerary: Your First Day in Lisbon

We recommend taking you directly to the historic heart of the city, to the exquisite and unique neighbourhoods of Graça , Alfama and Cathedral districts. These parts of Lisbon have preserved so much of its enduring soul and character, standing alongside some of the city’s seven hills. The light reflected from Rio Tejo dazzles on these hills, shining against bright cathedrals and buildings covered with colourful azulejos, or ceramic tiles.

For those of you who love to walk, the hills are there for a reason – you get incredible views of the city once you get to the top.

But here’s a handy tip: once you’ve finished nourishing yourselves with our delightful breakfast in our suites and ready to embark of your first day of Lisbon adventure, the best way to get to the highest point of the city is by taking the historic tram.

Take trams number 25 and 28, in this order

From our hotel location in Santos (in Calçada Marquês Abrantes), walk towards Largo Santos and take the 25 tram, which will take you through the Lapa and Estrela neighbourhoods. Don’t miss the Basilica da Estrela, one of the most stunning churches in Lisbon, on the way.

Stop in Prazeres, and change to the number 28 tram. Hop aboard this iconic transport and try and get a window seat (which is quite likely as there aren’t too many tourists at this part of the city, compared to taking the same tram in the Martim Moniz location, which is impossible due to long tourists queues). This will take you through a real sightseeing tour across Lisbon’s major districts, crossing the city’s western trajectory towards the historic hills.

Portas do Sol

You can alight in Portas do Sol, this bright open terrace have excellent views of the terracotta-roofed neighbourhood of Alfama, and the incredibly blue river Tagus beyond. You’ll recognise this in plenty of Lisbon postcards – this is a picture-perfect spot to see a romantic Lisbon panorama.

Graça miradouros, or viewpoints

To save you from too much walking, you can carry on with the tram ride up to Largo da Graça and check out the two glorious miradouros, or viewpoints, that give you incredible views of Lisbon. These viewpoints have been both romanticised in many forms, from photography to poetry, and even music.

First off is Miradouro da Graça – this lookout terrace with an open-air café, Esplanada da Graça, where you can have coffee, wine or light snacks whilst enjoying the view of the city, admiring views of Castelo São Jorge , an aerial view of the downtown neigbourhoods, the blue Tagus river and the Ponte 25 Abril Bridge. There’s a sculpture bust here dedicated to the poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen , who used to write poetry about Lisbon from this spot, overlooking the city. In fact, the official name of this miradouro is named after her.

This place is incredibly relaxing that often busking musicians come and play here, you can easily spend hours with a drink and listening to melodious tunes. Don’t forget to check out the 18 ^th -century church beside the terrace, Igreja da Graça, with its beautifully baroque pink-marble interior.

Next up is Miradouro Senhora da Monte, the highest viewpoint of the city, with a truly spectacular 180-degree panorama of the city. Some people bring their own drinks and relax here, or you can easily get some ice cream and lemonades from a van stationed here, and then cool down under the pine trees. There’s a tiled panel here where you can identify the iconic landmarks of the city, it’ll be worth it spending time learning the structures and topography of Lisbon. You can also check out this viewpoint during sunset, a truly popular spot during that golden hour of the day, as it gives you a stunning colour palette of the city.

Jardim da Cerca da Graça

If you’d like to take a little detour and see a somewhat hidden local spot, head down to Calçada do Monte to this park called Jardim da Cerca da Graça, this wonderful green space with a quiosque café, an orange orchard, a playground and a view of olive trees alongside the Graça hill. It’s a very pretty spot, where locals hang out, sometimes with their dogs. You can even come here for a picnic.

São Vicente da Fora

Further down Rua da Voz do Operário is one of the most iconic landmarks of Lisbon, the church and monastery of São Vicente da Fora. Dating back to the 12 ^th century, it has its origins to Augustinian Order, named after the patron saint whose bones were brought from Algarve to this place. (source: Wikipedia ). Do take some time and see the church gallery inside, which is free, or you can pay €5 and explore the monastery interior with a superb collection of azulejos, the mausoleum where the previous monarchs are laid to rest, and the incredible views of the tower above. Feira da Ladra

Just around the corner is the oldest flea market in town called Feira da Ladra, which runs on both Tuesdays and Saturdays. So if you’re in the mood for vintage treasure hunting and antique spotting, this is the perfect place as this market is renowned to offer a huge variety, from bric-a-bracs to tiles to books to furniture, and everything else you can possibly imagine. This is actually one of Europe’s oldest market of its kind, dating back to the 12 ^th century. Also check out the mural of tiles around Campo de Santa Clara, a colourful swathe depicting Lisbon in colourful painting. In the middle of this space is a green space where you can also breathe and relax, if you ever want to take a break from all that sightseeing and shopping. This park has a quiosque café, as well as adjacent restaurants to try.

Panteão Nacional

A short walk from the market is another national monument called Panteão Nacional, which used to be the Church of Santa Engrácia. Now it is the final resting place of some of the most important Portuguese luminaries, which includes the discoverer Vasco da Gama and Fado icon Amália Rodrigues . This building took nearly 300 years to finish (source: Lisboa Cool ). But you can see it’s truly a masterpiece. Climb up to the dome above, and you’ll find this sublime terrace where Lisbon light shines like a dream.

Alfama neighbourhood

You’ve heard about this historic place – a medieval maze of cobblestoned alleyways and Moorish ramparts and stairs that’s one of the most preserved areas of Lisbon. A village steeped on one of Lisbon’s hills, and so well constructed that it survived the last great earthquake. Here, there are colourful façades and charming, ancient squares, with freshly washed laundry hang on tiled walls. Shops, little cafes and patio restaurants dot around the area. Yes, you’ll often bump into other tourists, but this in fact, a very residential area where true Lisboetas hold fort. And in June, the whole neighbourhood turns into a street party of singing, dancing, drinks and grilled sardines, celebrating the feast of Santo Antonio, or St. Anthony, a patron saint of Lisbon.

Miradouro de Santo Estêvão

Don’t forget to step into Miradouro de Santo Estêvão, a hidden viewpoint in Alfama next to the Santo Estêvão church. It’s remains a very quiet spot, nicely tucked up among the stairs of Alfama, covered by trees. It’s a cool spot to unwind, listen to the music being played by buskers, or just quietly gaze into the gorgeous view of Lisbon beyond.

A delightful, unpretentious café that offers helpful service and selection of food to spare. It’s calm and has a vintage feel, extending to a great outdoor dining space, just next to the cathedral and a row of orange trees.

Agulha no Palheiro

This in unassuming spot near the Museu Militar has no sign outside, but it’s worth going for the food alone. It has a laidback vibe and vintage furniture, and since it’s small, it’s almost always full so book in advance. Their dishes-for-sharing are dribble-worthy.
